Finally, mothers and daughters came together and completed a joint interview within 2 weeks of their initial individual interviews. The women completed some standard measures of intergenerational ties involving rating scales, but they also answered open-ended questions about their relationships, provided the endings to different stories about mothers and daughters, and were observed in their interactions with one another.

They completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D; Radloff, 1977; Radloff & Teri, 1986).
