A zoom burst is definitely a situation where you should use Shutter Priority or Manual mode, and when selecting your shutter speed you need to consider what kind of result you’re looking for. With an exposure of 3 seconds, for example, you will produce an image dominated by the zoom effect, which is good for abstract photos of perhaps a zoomed neon light. A faster shutter speed is more likely to reveal some of the scene, while the other extreme—an exposure of 20 seconds or more—will allow you to zoom out for part of the exposure, and then expose for a normal long exposure for the remainder of the exposure, allowing you to show the “sharp” scene as well as the zoom burst.

A shutter speed of 1/4–1 sec often works well. A good subject for this type of shot is a person’s head, or perhaps a lone building, but you can be creative: I’ve used this technique to shoot directly down a subway carriage. The best shots will be those in which any trails from bright lights in your scene do not encroach on the central subject. Zooming in to the exact center guarantees that the highlights are pushed outward, but there are no hard and fast rules. Rather than try and plan your zoom bursts precisely, enjoy it and make good use of the instant playback on your camera to get the result you are after.

Details 1. Tire tracks: The tire track with the mud on it offers great texture and patterns, and the fact it’s repeated on the ground is a nice added bonus. As the mud is there it gives the hint that this is not a concrete urban environment but something more rural. 2. Garlic: A still-life image of the product being grown on this farm is a nice touch when telling the overall story. This photo is a simple, well-lit and well-balanced composition that has utilized the rule of thirds. 3. Rice terraces: There are many different types of photos you can take of rice terraces.
